The !Xun Language Advocacy Group is a community-led initiative based in Platfontein, South Africa. We are local speakers, elders, youth, and language activists who came together during a community workshop held on 8–9 April 2025. From this gathering, the need for a formal structure to support and protect the !Xun language became clear.
!Xun is one of the most endangered languages in the world, with fewer than 20,000 speakers globally—and fewer than 10,000 in South Africa. Platfontein is home to the largest concentration of !Xun speakers in the country, and we believe it should serve as the heart of language preservation efforts in South Africa.
Our group exists to ensure that the voices of our community are central to all efforts related to the documentation, maintenance, and revitalisation of !Xun. We aim to create a bridge between our local knowledge and the work of researchers, funders, linguists, and institutions who want to support the language.
